Kerala Tour Destinations |
Kerala Tourism Kerala, situated on the lush and tropical Malabar Coast, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. Named as one of the "ten paradises of the world" and "50 places of a lifetime" by the National Geographic Traveler magazine, Kerala is especially known for its ecotourism initiatives. Its unique culture and traditions, coupled with its varied demographics, has made Kerala one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Growing at a rate of 13.31%, the state's tourism industry is a major contributor to the state's economy.Until the early 1980s, Kerala was a relatively unknown destination;most tourist circuits focused on North India. Aggressive marketing campaigns launched by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation, the government agency that oversees tourism prospects of the state, laid the foundation for the growth of the tourism industry. In the decades that followed, Kerala's tourism industry was able to transform the state into one of the niche holiday destinations in India. The tagline Kerala- God's Own Country has been widely used in Kerala's tourism promotions and soon became synonymous with the state. In 2006, Kerala attracted 8.5 million tourist arrivals, an increase of 23.68% over the previous year, making the state one of the fastest-growing destinations in the world.Popular attractions in the state include the beaches at Kovalam, Cherai, Varkala, Kappad, Muzhappilangad and Bekal; the hill stations of Munnar, Nelliampathi, Ponmudi and Wayanad; and national parks and wildlife sanctuaries at Periyar and Eravikulam National Park. The "backwaters" region, which comprises an extensive network of interlocking rivers, lakes, and canals that centre on Alleppey, Kollam, Kumarakom, and Punnamada (where the annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race is held in August), also see heavy tourist traffic. Heritage sites, such as the Padmanabhapuram Palace and the Mattancherry Palace, are also visited. Cities such as Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram are popular centres for their shopping and traditional theatrical performances. During early summer, the Thrissur Pooram is conducted, attracting foreign tourists who are largely drawn by the festival's elephants and celebrants. The main pilgrim tourist spots of Kerala are Sabarimala Temple, Chettikulangara Temple, Vadakumnathan Temple, Guruvayoor Temple, Malayattor Church and Parumala Church. Munnar Tourism Until the early 1990s, Munnar, despite its enchanting natural beauty and salubrious climate, continued to remain a sleepy plantation town. Its tourism potential was realised only by the Sterling Group and Mahindra Holidays. However, the promotion of Kerala globally as God's Own Country and the rapidly increasing spending capacity of middle class Indians has resulted in a virtual explosion of tourism activities in Munnar. Resorts, big and small, have started springing up all around the town and overnight the once sleepy town has became a bustling tourist destination. Many of the developments done by unscrupulous investors have had a significant detrimental impact on the environment in Munnar and the once romantic beauty of the "sleepy town of Munnar" has significantly eroded over the years. Moreover the huge throng of domestic and foreign tourists in their buses and cars have added to pollution in Munnar and stretched the town's infrastructure and service delivery systems to their limits.Mattupetty Dam reservoir, near Munnar.Earlier most of the land around Munnar was leased out to planters and the only activity permitted on such leased land was plantation of cardamom. Ownership continued to remain with the Government and even cutting of trees on such leased land was prohibited. However, the recent development of resorts has resulted in large scale deforestation and violation of government regulations governing land use, forests and plantation cultivation. It ultimately came to a pass in 2007, and the Government sprung into action to demolish illegal resort constructions to restore the beauty of the town.Irrespective of all this, tourism has flourished over the years in Munnar and important tourist activities include boating (in the reservoirs of the many dams), trekking, parasailing, hot air ballooning and camping and wild life safaris in the jungles and sanctuary. The presence of all these activities and more has ultimately led to Munnar becoming a choice destination for foreign as well as domestic tourists. One can also see people from nearby districts in Kerala and Tamil Nadu thronging the town during weekends.Munnar was the starting point of Kundala Valley Railway functional between 1890 to 1924. Thekkady Tourism Situated in
kerala, close to the Kerala - Tamil Nadu border town - Kumily, it is located
about 257 km (160 miles) from Trivandrum, 114 km from Madurai Airport, 185 km
from Cochin International Airport and 114 km from Kottayam railway station. The
sanctuary is famous for its dense evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist deciduous
forests and savanna grass lands. It is home to herds of elephants, sambar,
tigers, gaur, lion-tailed Macaques and Nilgiri Langurs. The Periyar Wildlife
sanctuary is spread across 777 km² (300 sq. miles), of which 360 km² (139
sq. miles) is thick evergreen forest. The Wild Life Sanctuary was declared a
Tiger Reserve in 1978. The splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar
Dam across the Periyar River adds to the charm of the park. The greatest
attraction of Periyar are the herds of wild elephants that come down to play in
the lake.Thekkady is considered a heaven for natural spices such as black
pepper, cardamom, cinnamon and clove. Kumarakom Tourism It is a unique experience that will beckon the visitors time and time again as there are several activities for visitors. The Bird Sanctuary can be visited by canoes, which can be arranged with local fishermen at the entrance to the sanctuary. A two-hour rowing canoe trip is quite cheap, and is best undertaken in the evening or early morning to avoid the afternoon sun.House boats or speed boats can cover longer distances but cost more to hire.Taj Garden Retreat the first modern tourist resort in Kumarakom is established in the Victorian two storied bungalow built by Alfred George Baker in the year 1881, on huge pieces of Teak wood rafters packed in mud as a base. This house on the lake at Kumarakom was the house of four generations of the Baker family, for over hundred years. The bird Sanctuary and the two storied Bungalow built by Mr.A G Baker on the muddy land are places of interest for tourists from all over the world. The bungalow still remains grand but silent reminder of an age and people whose hard work cannot be erased by time. Kerala Houseboat Tour The houseboats in Kerala, south India, are huge, slow-moving, exotic barges used for leisure trips. They are a reworked model of Kettuvallams (in the Malayalam language, Kettu means "tied with ropes", and vallam means "boat"), which, in earlier times, were used to carry rice and spices from Kuttanad to the Kochi port. Kerala houseboats were considered a convenient means of transportation. The popularity of Kettuvallams has returned in the function as major tourist attractions.Such a houseboat is about 60 to 70 feet (about 18 to 21 meters) long and about 15 feet (about 5 m) wide at the middle. The hull is made of wooden planks that are held together by ropes of coconut fiber; the usual wood is 'Anjili'. The roof is made of bamboo poles and palm leaves. The exterior of the boat is painted with protective coats of cashew nut oil. Alappuzha Tourism Soon after Alappuzha was developed as a port by the Diwan Raja Kesavadas, the town started functioning as the main commercial centre of the state of Travancore. Export flourished from the port. Spices like pepper were the main export items. Thachil Mathoo Tharakan, a close confidante of the Diwan, pioneered the export of timber. Domestic trade was also active. Many traders from Gujarat came and settled down here to do trading, leading to the presence even now of a Gujarati community in the town. Alappuzha is a centre for coir industries. Later coir (different kinds of rope made from coconut fibre) became a major product of the town, both for local and world markets. Public Transport Boat service in KeralaAlappuzha is now the hub for backwater tourism in Kerala. House boats locally called "Kettuvallam" are available on hire on a daily basis as well as for longer durations to take visitors on the old waterways. These house boats in general have 2 bedrooms and attached bathrooms. Some of the boats have the bedrooms fitted with air conditioners. A routine trip includes food cooked on board in the traditional Kuttanad style. Alappuzha is unique in that it is the only district in Kerala without forest. Varkala Tourism Varkala is the only place in southern Kerala where one can find cliffs adjacent to the Arabian sea.[citation needed] These tertiary sedimentary formation cliffs are a unique geological feature in the otherwise flat Kerala coast, and is known among geologists as Varkala Formation and a geological monument as declared by the Geological survey of India. There are numerous water spouts and spas on the sides of these cliffs.A famous beach resort, Varkala is also famous for its 900 year old Janardana swami temple which is an important Vaishnavaite shrine in India and is referred to as Dakshin Kashi (Benares of the south). The temple is located close to the Papanasam beach, which is considered to have holy waters which wash away sins, and is also an important Ayurveda treatment centre. The temple has an ancient bell removed from a shipwreck, donated by the captain of the Dutch vessel which sank near Varkala without causing any casualties.Another major landmark in Varkala is the Sivagiri Mutt, established by the great social reformer Sree Narayana Guru. The hill-top mausoleum of Sree Narayana Guru is one of the most famous monuments in Kerala. The adjacent hills house the East-West University of Brahmavidya and Sree Narayana Gurukulam.Another important feature of Varkala is the now dilapidated Varkala Tunnel, part of the TS Canal, which was an important waterway during pre-independence times. Kovalam Tourism
Kovalam has three
crescent shaped beaches separated by rocky outcroppings. Shallow waters
stretching for hundreds of metres are ideal for swimming. The beaches have steep
palm covered headlands and are lined with shops that offer all kinds of goods
and services. The larger of the beaches is called Light House Beach for its 35
metre high light house which towers over it atop Kurumkal hillock. The second
largest one is Hawah Beach named thus for the topless European women who used to
throng there. It was the first topless beach in India. Topfree bathing and
parading is banned now except in private coves owned by resorts. Visitors
frequent these two beaches. The northern part of the beach is known as Samudra
Beach in tourism parlance. A large promontory separates this part from the
southern side. Samudra Beach doesn't have tourists thronging there or hectic
business. The local fishermen ply their trade on this part. The sands on the
beaches in Kovalam are partially black in colour due to the presence
of ilmenite and thorazite. The normal tourist season is from September to May.
Ashoka beach is also the part of Kovalam beach. Wayanad Tourism
Wayanad District in the north-east of Kerala, India, was
formed on November 1, 1980 as the 12th district by carving out areas from
Kozhikode and Kannur districts. Kalpetta is the district headquarters as well as
the only municipal town in the district. The region was known as Mayakshetra
(Maya's land) in the earliest records. Mayakshetra evolved into Mayanad and
finally to Wayanad. But the Folk etymology of the word says it is a combination
of Vayal (paddy) and Naad (land), making it 'The Land of Paddy Fields'. There
are many indigenous tribals in this area. It is set high on the majestic Western
Ghats with altitudes ranging from 700 to 2100 m |
